Job Description

Job Overview:

The Costume Designer for Coronado School of the Arts is responsible for the design, creation, and management of costumes for theater productions. This role involves close collaboration with the Theater Director, production team, and student performers to ensure the costumes align with the vision of the show and support the storytelling. The Costume Designer may work with a team of students, volunteers, and parents to source, design, alter, or construct costumes as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Costume Design & Conceptualization :
    • Collaborate with the Theater Director to develop costume designs that reflect the production’s themes, characters, and historical context.
    • Research and create design sketches or mood boards for costumes that align with the show’s aesthetic and time period.
    • Present costume ideas to the production team and adapt designs based on feedback.
  2. Costume Production & Coordination :
    • Source fabrics, materials, and ready-made costumes from local suppliers, costume shops, or online platforms.
    • Coordinate with seamstresses, volunteers, or students to alter or build costumes from scratch as needed.
    • Ensure costumes fit actors properly by conducting fittings and making necessary alterations.
    • Collaborate with the hair and makeup team to ensure a cohesive visual style for each character.
  3. Budget Management :
    • Manage the costume budget in coordination with the Director of Special Programs.
    • Keep detailed records of costume-related expenses and receipts.
  4. Costume Maintenance & Organization :
    • Oversee the storage, labeling, and maintenance of costumes throughout the production process.
    • Ensure costumes are in good condition, clean, and ready for performances and rehearsals.
    • Manage the organization and return of rented or borrowed costumes after the production.
  5. Student & Volunteer Supervision :
    • Work with students interested in costume design, providing mentorship and hands-on training in design, sewing, and wardrobe management.
    • Coordinate with parents or other volunteers who assist with costume production.
  6. Performance Support :
    • Attend dress rehearsals to ensure costumes function as intended in performance conditions.
    • Be available during performances to address any costume malfunctions or last-minute adjustments.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of costume design, fashion history, and sewing techniques.
  • Ability to create, source, and manage a variety of costumes within a budget.
  • Strong organizational skills for managing costume pieces, fittings, and alterations.
  • Creativity and an eye for detail to bring characters to life through costume.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with students, staff, and volunteers.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends during the rehearsal and performance period.

Preferred Experience:

  • Previous experience in costume design, particularly for theater.
  • Experience working with high school students or in an educational setting.
  • Familiarity with theater production processes and timelines.

Work Environment:

  • Work is primarily performed in a classroom, workshop, or theater setting.
  • Some offsite work (costume sourcing, alterations, or rentals) may be required.
  • Flexible schedule required, including evenings and weekends leading up to and during productions.

Independent Contractor Stipend and Supplies Budget:

$1,500 per show, up to 3 shows per school year. CoSA has a full costume shop with equipment and supplies to manage a majority of shows fully in house with minimal purchases. $1,000 to $2,000 budget per show for supplies as needed. Contractor can recruit CoSA volunteers to support the position (recommend 2 to 3 volunteers per show).
