Job Description

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA CHAMPAIGN

DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY CLINICAL MEDICINE

Open Rank Specialized or TT Professor in Small Animal Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care

100% appointment (12-month basis)

Requirements: The successful candidate must have a DVM degree (or equivalent) and have achieved ACVECC/ECVECC board-certification or have completed residency training and have credentials accepted by ACVECC/ECVECC by the start date of the position. Preference will be given to candidates with ACVECC/ECVECC certification, advanced degree(s), previous leadership positions, and a track record in scholarship.

Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to provide clinical services in veterinary small animal emergency and critical care (SAECC), contribute to clinical instruction of residents, interns and veterinary students, and communicate effectively with clients, referring veterinarians and other members of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Teaching responsibilities will also include didactic, small group and laboratory instruction of veterinary and graduate students. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in clinically relevant or basic research projects.

The University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital is a full-time facility with rapidly growing emergency and critical care services. The SAECC service is looking for an additional faculty member to join our four small animal criticalists. The SAECC service has 3 full time ER instructors, 25 full-time certified veterinary technicians, 5 ACVECC residents in training (three of whom start July 2024), 1 SAECC intern, and 11 rotating interns. The SAECC service has a NOVA stat CC express, a Maquet Servo ventilator, 2 high flow nasal oxygen systems, in-house blood bank, and access to advanced coagulation technology (VCM, TEG, thrombinoscope, platelet aggregation). The SAECC service is also launching a new extracorporeal therapy program. A Vivid IQ ultrasound unit is available for echo-hemodynamic assessments, equipped with two phased array probes, one microconvex probe, a linear probe, Doppler (CW, PW, color) and tissue Doppler technologies.

Our SAECC service recently moved into a newly renovated facility in which the ER and ICU have direct line of sight to optimize patient care along with a new rounds room with advanced technology for clinical teaching. This facility complements the establishment of an intermediate care ward recently introduced in the newly remodeled small animal surgical and anesthesia suites. In addition, on-site services within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital include cardiology, ophthalmology, dentistry, medical and radiation oncology, neurology, diagnostic imaging (including CT, and 3T-MRI), internal medicine, surgery (soft-tissue, oncologic and orthopedic), clinical pathology and diagnostic pathology. A new multi-million dollar cancer treatment and research center is in development.

Percent time dedicated to teaching, scholarly activities, and clinical service will be based on the successful candidate's appointment.

Professional opportunities: The University of Illinois has a tradition of excellence as a Land Grant University and a Tier One Research University. The College of Veterinary Medicine is lauded for our unique clinically integrated professional veterinary curriculum and is supported by innovators in teaching, learning, course design, continuing education, and medical illustration. The College is also focused on advancing clinical, applied and translational research efforts across the college and university by developing quality relationships with world-class scientists and investigators. With these resources, the motivated candidate will find significant opportunity and support to craft a fulfilling and rewarding career.

Our faculty and staff provide broad public engagement through operation of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, a regional primary and referral care center for the delivery of state-of-the art veterinary medical services. The Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine features modern research and animal care facilities and is planning an exciting, large-scale expansion of our surgical corridor and intensive care unit. Our faculty conduct discovery and provide instruction and service relevant to companion animals, horse, food and fiber animals, exotic, wildlife and zoological species. We are dedicated not only to animal health and welfare, but also to the improved understanding of the human-animal bond, food production systems and ecosystem health. The University of Illinois is a premier public research university and is gaining recognition for its uniquely multidisciplinary and highly collaborative research environment.

In 2023 Forbes ranked the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as #9 among all US public colleges, on the basis of return on investment, student success, student debt, and alumni leadership and influence. Only one other campus featuring a veterinary college ranked above Illinois.

Personal opportunities: Urbana-Champaign offers the residential advantages of a medium-sized university city, including a rich experience of farm-to-table cuisine, music, art, all-season outdoor activities, and other life-enriching opportunities. There is easy access to many large cities in the Midwest including Chicago, St. Louis, Nashville, Memphis, Louisville, Milwaukee, and more. In 2010, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign received top rankings by Harvard University's Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education for its pre-tenure practices promoting work and home balance.
