Job Description
Hello,
Position: Infrastructure Project Manager Location: Montpelier, VT 05620 - Remote Duration: Long-term Contract At present, the Client supports multiple domains as a legacy architecture established prior to the creation of ADS. Maintaining these domains consumes resources that could be more effectively allocated to addressing the Client's Mission, and creates unnecessary complexity within the Client's environment, limiting the ability to efficiently distribute software applications and security patches in addition to inhibiting users' mobility between office buildings and access to services within other Agencies.
Benefits In response, the Client has authorized a project to consolidate the domains into a single domain, VSMS. Doing so will provide the following benefits:
- Enhanced Security Management: Centralizing the Active Directory environment administration allows for more streamlined and consistent security management practices. By consolidating user accounts, access controls, and authentication mechanisms, the organization can enforce uniform security policies and access controls across the entire enterprise, reducing the risk of misconfigurations and security vulnerabilities that could arise from managing multiple independent AD environments.
- Unified Identity and Access Management (IAM): A consolidated AD environment simplifies identity and access management processes. Users' identities and access rights are managed in one place, making it easier to grant, revoke, and monitor permissions across the organization's various resources, both on-premises and in the cloud. This contributes to better visibility and control over who has access to what, enhancing overall security.
- Simplified Authentication and Single Sign-On (SSO): Centralizing AD enables the implementation of single sign-on solutions that allow users to access multiple services and resources with a single set of credentials. This not only enhances user experience but also improves security by reducing the need for users to remember multiple passwords and by providing a centralized point to monitor and enforce strong authentication practices.
- Consolidated Audit and Compliance: A centralized AD environment facilitates comprehensive auditing and compliance efforts. Monitoring and reporting on user activities, access attempts, and changes become more straightforward when all the data is consolidated in one place. This aids in meeting regulatory requirements and internal security policies.
- Efficient Resource Management: By consolidating forests and domains, the organization can optimize resource utilization. Reducing the number of separate AD environments reduces administrative overhead and can lead to cost savings in terms of infrastructure, licensing, and maintenance.
- Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity: A centralized AD environment can be designed with disaster recovery and business continuity strategies in mind. Data backup and recovery processes can be standardized and managed centrally, ensuring that in case of a failure, the organization can recover its critical identity and access data efficiently.
- Scalability and Agility: A consolidated AD environment is generally more scalable and adaptable to changing organizational needs. It can accommodate new users, applications, and services with greater ease, both on-premises and in the cloud, helping the organization remain agile in its technology adoption.
- Reduced Complexity: Managing multiple independent AD environments in a complex organization can lead to administrative complexity, potential inconsistencies, and increased overhead. Consolidating forests and domains simplifies administration and maintenance tasks, leading to operational efficiency.
- Hybrid Cloud Strategy: A consolidated AD environment is well-suited for organizations adopting a hybrid cloud strategy. This approach allows seamless integration and authentication between on-premises and cloud resources, ensuring secure and efficient access for users across the entire technology landscape.
- Improved User Experience: A unified AD environment enhances user experience by providing consistent access to resources, regardless of whether they are hosted on-premises or in the cloud. This can contribute to increased user productivity and satisfaction.
Existing Technology Environment The Agency of Digital Services supports 10 separate Active Directory (AD) login forests (source domains) and 1 resource forest (VSMS).
