Summary : The Security Officer is a part-time position (~16 hours per week; some weeks with no hours scheduled due to holidays or work requirement) that is a member of Queens University’s Public Safety and Campus Police department and is responsible for ensuring security to Queens Sports Complex Athletic Facilities by conducting foot patrols and security checks, monitoring card access system for unauthorized users, responding quickly and appropriately to incidents, identifying and reporting hazards, assisting with special events and crowd control and completing accurate and thorough written reports.

The Security Officer reports to the officer in charge, up to the Chief of Police. This position is not exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is eligible to earn overtime pay for hours worked above 40 in a single work week.

This position is considered a responsible employee for purposes of the university’s Sexual Misconduct Policy. As such, this position is required to report any incident of sexual misconduct or interpersonal violence to the university’s Title IX Coordinator when made aware of such.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • The nature of this position requires a physical presence and professional appearance during assigned shift.
  • Protects and safeguards Queens University students, employees, and attendees to the Sports Complex from criminal and or potentially dangerous situations.
  • Protects University property from theft and vandalism and assists Campus Police Officers in deterring criminal activity at the Sports Complex.
  • Builds and natures strong rapport with Athletics Department employees and promoters, maintenance, etc. to convey a sense of safety and security.
  • Checks exterior and interior of buildings; turns off/on lights, locks doors and windows.
  • Patrols areas and reports suspicious activities. Monitors facility through card access monitoring and proactive foot patrol for unauthorized individuals.
  • Assists in providing crowd control during athletic and special events.
  • Performs inspections and reports defects. Completes Found Property reports for any unattended items. Completes reports and uses two-way-radio to communicate with Police Communications Center.
  • Provides information and directions to faculty, staff, students, visitors, and attendees to the Sports Complex.
  • Reports to University Police Communications any damaged property, vandalism, suspicious activity, criminal activity, open doors or propped doors, unsecured hazardous materials, found property or assistance given to Patrol Officers or Athletic staff members.
  • Writes complete, timely and accurate operation reports concerning incidents of suspicious activity; found property, unsafe conditions in a particular area, light and emergency call box outages.
  • Must establish excellent Community Relations with clients, employees, promoters, managers, performers, and other colleges and universities using the Sports Complex.

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet department and University needs.

Qualifications



Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required :

  • Previous security experience, particularly on an educational campus, is preferred.
  • Valid NC Driver license and good driving record; must be insurable.
  • Skill in providing protection services.
  • Must be highly service and customer relations oriented
  • Proven ability to write detailed and accurate reports.
  • Ability to detect criminal activity and assist Police Officers with investigations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to use a computer for report writing and timekeeping.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety procedures and make logical decisions based on presented facts.
  • Proven ability to be an independent thinker and make logical choices and decisions.
  • Ability to detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel.
  • Ability to operate equipment safely, such as card access systems and radio equipment.
  • Ability to learn Campus Student Judicial System.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare accurate, timely reports.
  • Ability to successfully complete First Aid, CPR and Bloodborne Pathogen training
  • Basic knowledge of Hazardous Materials.
  • Availability and willingness to work holidays, weekends, day and night shifts and periodic overtime.
  • Must possess or be capable of developing a working knowledge of security technology, i.e. operation and monitoring, Card Reader Access, Video Systems, etc.
  • High school graduate or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
